How many homes do we need, and where should we put them?

These are the questions the District Council will be asking you in a public consultation from 26 August to 23 September 2011.

This will be your opportunity to influence these decisions.

To have your say please complete the online questionnaire on the District Council’s website which will be “live” during the consultation period.

Residents without computer access can view a hard copy of the document in their local library or District Council Offices.

The District Council is preparing a new plan for the future of Chichester District (excluding the area covered by the South Downs National Park). This plan will be called the Core Strategy and will cover the period to 2028. It will alter the way the district looks in years to come and will decide where future housing will be located for you, your children and grand children.

Because of the introduction of the South Downs National Park Authority, the Core Strategy will not cover the entire district; it will include the south of the district (Chichester, Tangmere, Selsey, East Wittering and Bracklesham); and parts of the north (including the villages of Kirdford, Loxwood and Wisborough Green).

The National Park Authority will be preparing its own Core Strategy in due course.

Across the district as a whole we have seen an average of about 430 additional dwellings completed each year. We desperately need more affordable housing to be built, but the recession has slowed things down. We know that we have to cater for growth in the population as people move in. The District Council wants to hear from local residents, developers and infrastructure providers just what they think should be provided and where.

For information on the Core Strategy please visit the following website: www.chichester.gov.uk and follow the link to Environment and Planning, then Local Development Framework.

HMS Sidlesham, built in 1955 or The Gerald Daniel as she was known has been at Cobnor in Chichester Harbour for 37 years, initially brought there in 1973 as an accommodation ship for West Sussex Police Cadets. The Charity Christian Youth Enterprises Sailing Centre took the ship over in 1985, establishing a premier sailing and activity centre used by schools, youth groups and individuals. The centre runs schools programmes, activity events, courses and camps for those from 8 years upwards and families.
The Gerald Daniel has served the Charity for 25 years as an exciting accommodation ship with a fully equipped Galley, beds for 38 people and a meeting room/dining room. There is a permanent jetty giving access from the land and water at all states of the tide. Shore facilities include classroom, briefing room sail store and activity field.

After 25 years the Charity has decided to retire The Gerald Daniel which was moved from her berth on 7th October ready for a journey to a new life on The River Thames. Refer to www.cyesc.blogspot.com for video and photos. She is to be replaced with a new ship that is presently being fitted out in Portchester Hampshire. Over £900,000 has been raised towards £1.1m required to complete the new ship, which will be brought round to Chichester Harbour on 5th November. The arrival of the new ship will signal a new chapter in the history of the Charity as it seeks to offer enhanced and new facilities and programmes. There will be beds with en suite facilities for 50 people, a modern galley, dining area with harbour views and four other meeting areas.
Please refer to www.cye.org.uk and www.cyesc.blogspot.com or ring Norman Doney Executive Director or Jon Bennets Centre Manager for more details. 01243 573375 email Norman@cye.org.uk or jon@cye.org.uk.
